- The second collaboration between Los Angeles label Basketcase and New Balance. This time, the partnership shifts its focus to soccer culture, using the archival New Balance Gator Run as the canvas.
Rather than celebrating star players, Basketcase founder Zach Kinninger explores the experience of the ”alternates“—the kids who were part of the team, the practices, and the friendships, but weren‘t necessarily the stars of the game. The project draws from Kinninger’s childhood memories of soccer as a social experience: being outside, hanging out with friends, and belonging to a group.
That idea aligns closely with Basketcase‘s broader storytelling approach, which often focuses on nostalgia, youth culture, and personal memories rather than performance sports themselves.
From a design perspective, what’s interesting is that Basketcase didn‘t simply make a ”football shoe.“ They used soccer as a vehicle to talk about belonging and identity. The shoes feel less like sportswear and more like a nostalgic artifact of youth sports culture
