LOT.802 COSSACK LEATHER JACKET "AI DYED NAVY"
Details:
- The leather jacket is based on an American leather jacket from the 1930s discovered in New York. This jacket has a beautiful silhouette with constructed sleeves and armholes, which reminds us of the days when people used to ride horses. Original parts such as the fan-shaped zipper with an art deco stamp and Bakelite buttons are used. The item uses vegetable-tanned leather made from horsehide, using a tanning technique called pit-tanning.
For AI DYED NAVY (indigo dye), the item uses sukumo dye sourced from Tokushima Prefecture to undergo "hon-ai-zome (genuine indigo dyeing)", which involves fermentation process. This ancient method requires a significant amount of time and labor. Sukumo, which plays the essential role in the indigo dyeing process, is made from leaves of a plant called "tade-ai". The leaves are first dried and fermented until they resemble compost. Professionals called "ai-shi" manually perform the entire dye-making process. After fermenting for half a year to one year, sukumo is added with a lye (solution of ash dissolved in water) for further fermentation until it matures. The dye-making process is called "ai-date", which involves additional fermentation with the help of bran and Japanese sake. The mixture requires stirring every morning and evening for one to two weeks. The resulting deep blue obtained from the dye is known as Japan Blue.
